Accounting Technician / Bookkeeper

The Nova Scotia Construction Sector Council (NSCSC) has an immediate opening for a friendly, task-oriented Accounting Technician/Bookkeeper with great organizational skills and an unparalleled attention to detail. This role will be responsible for processing the day-to-day financial activities as well as preparing financial documentation as required for monthly, annual and project reporting purposes.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

The Accounting Technician/Bookkeeper will be responsible for

• Keep financial records and establish, maintain and balance various accounts using manual and computerized bookkeeping systems
• Post journal entries and reconcile accounts, prepare trial balance of books, maintain general ledgers and prepare financial statements
• Calculate and prepare payments for expenses including utility, tax and other bills
• Complete and submit tax remittance forms, workers' compensation forms, benefits forms and other government documents
• Prepare tax returns and perform other bookkeeping activities
• Prepare other statistical, financial and accounting reports
• Assist with preparing and monitoring budgets, forecasts, funding proposals and claims
• Working with auditors during ‘year-end’ reviews
• Maintaining banking relationships
• Providing assistance and support to industry partners
• Other duties as required to support the operation of the NSCSC

Skills/Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal attributes:

• Completion of a college program in accounting, bookkeeping or a related field,

-or-

Completion of two years (first level) of a recognized professional accounting program (i.e., Chartered Accounting, Certified General Accounting),

-or-

Courses in accounting or bookkeeping combined with several years of experience as a financial or accounting clerk are required.

• Demonstrated experience in managing all aspects of regular financial reporting
• Strong analytical skills with a knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control principles including generally accepted accounting principles
• Accounting/bookkeeping experience within a not-for-profit organization would be considered an asset
• Experience with or knowledge of the construction industry would be considered an asset
• Must have a high level of professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality
• Excellent knowledge of Sage 50 Premium
• Proficiency with Microsoft 365 including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
• Experience in budgeting, forecasting and monthly financial reporting
• Ability to work proactively, cooperatively, and collectively with fellow employees, management, and Board of Directors
• Outstanding communication skills (written and verbal)
• Flexibility to adapt to changes in project requirements, scheduling, and deliverables
• The ability to work independently and as part of a larger team

Work Environment

Primarily a busy small office environment located in Halifax, NS.

Hours of Work

Full-time – Typically 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM (Monday to Friday)

Occasional overnight travel and some evening or weekend work may be required

Remuneration

Based on experience and education

$60,000 - $70,000 / year
