Software Engineer SRE - Gateway

About The Role

At ASB, our Payments platforms sit at the heart of how New Zealand moves money. We're looking for a Software Engineer to join the Gateway Squad, a key part of our critical Payments Platform.

This is a hands-on engineering role focused on the support, configuration, integration, and continuous improvement of ASB's SWIFT and payments ecosystem. You'll work across SWIFT applications, Messaging queues, Environment support, Linux Operating System administration, and operational excellence, helping to ensure our payment services remain secure, resilient, and available 24x7.

Working closely with Payment Operations, Project, Infrastructure, Security, vendors, and other engineering teams, you'll contribute to both the operational stability and ongoing evolution of critical payment platforms that support domestic and international payment processing.

What You'll Do

• Support and maintain SWIFT payment applications and messaging infrastructure.
• Manage message queues, channels, message routing, and message recovery activities.
• Monitor and troubleshoot end-to-end payment message flows across SWIFT, Queues, and internal payment systems.
• Investigate and resolve payment processing incidents, message failures, routing issues, and system exceptions.
• Configure and maintain SWIFT connectivity, routing rules, certificates, interfaces, and reference data.
• Perform application and Operating System administration, upgrades, patching, and configuration management activities.
• Monitor OS and Platform health, queue depths, message throughput, and operational performance.
• Support disaster recovery testing, resilience exercises, and high-availability capabilities.
• Participate in Incident, Problem, Change, Configuration and Release management processes.
• Support compliance, audit, and risk management, and work within regulatory requirements, governance frameworks and internal control processes.
• Collaborate with operations, engineering, and security teams to ensure reliable and secure payment services.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that improve platform reliability, supportability, and operational efficiency.
• Perform root cause analysis and implement preventative measures to reduce recurring issues.

What We're Looking For

• Around 5 years' experience in application support, software engineering, platform engineering, systems administration, security or related technical roles.
• Experience working with enterprise applications or business-critical systems in a production environment.
• A genuine interest in technology, integration platforms, and how complex systems work together.
• A strong willingness to learn new technologies, platforms, business domains, and regulatory environments, with the ability to absorb information quickly.
• Experience troubleshooting technical issues and working collaboratively to resolve problems.
• Familiarity with Linux and/or Windows environments.
• Exposure to monitoring, operational support, or production support activities.
• An automation mindset and an interest in improving processes through scripting or tooling.
• An interest in learning about risk management, compliance, governance frameworks, audit practices, and operational controls within a regulated environment.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineers, vendors, business stakeholders, and control functions.
• A positive, team-first attitude with a desire to contribute, learn from others, and continuously improve.
• Nice to have
• Experience with Python, PowerShell, Bash or similar scripting languages Experience with messaging and integration technologies.
• Knowledge of payment systems, ISO 20022 or financial services environments ITIL knowledge and experience working within regulated environments RHCE certification or equivalent Linux administration experience Strong security awareness and experience working with secure-by-design principles
