Teacher’s Assistant

The Teacher’s Assistant will assist the Teacher, tutor students in academic subjects such as reading, writing, math, and other areas. The Teacher’s Assistant will also work effectively with students in after school activities and assist with behavior management, discipline, interpersonal actions, and act as a role model. Teacher’s Assistant further helps mentor students in a variety of learning and life experiences.

About The Melting Pot Ministries

Library, located in South Park Township, is one of many small coal-mining communities established by the Pittsburgh Coal Company at the turn of the twentieth century.

Unfortunately by the l960’s, the coal industry no longer provided viable employment options for Western Pennsylvania and many families in certain sections of those communities began to face serious hardships and began witnessing the deterioration of the community as they once knew it. Our communities expressed fear that our children and youth would surrender to negative risk-factors that existed in their environments if they did not increase the community’s capacity to protect them.

The need to provide services to the target population and neighborhood dramatically increased as we began experiencing an influx of low-income single-head of family residents following the demolition of deteriorating inner-city public housing plans in the city.

Academically, many of these children were now attending local area schools but had come from schools that were declared by the State Department of Education as failing.

Today, we are a grassroots organization rooted in the Christian faith, with strong ties to both the Christian community and underserved families in the South Hills. We currently reach over 150 socially, culturally, and economically disadvantaged South Hills youth and their families each year.

We have built a distinctive collaborative team drawn from our faith-based, mental health, and educational communities, and our committed Board of Directors represents a diverse cross-section of our Christian faith and professional community.

Performance Responsibilities

A. Planning/Preparation

• Assist the teacher(s) in preparing materials, teaching aids, bulletin boards and equipment for direct instructional activity, including locating, copying, collating, distributing, and/or grouping materials.
• Schedule space for specialized instructional programs and coordinate the arrangement of equipment, desks, tables, chairs and activity areas.
• Examine short- and long
• -term unit plans prepared by the teacher and anticipate the need for specific supplies and materials

B. Administrative/Management

• Use time efficiently.
• Assist in maintaining the security of records, materials, and equipment.
• Check objective tests and mark errors but not assign a grade.
• Escort or transport students to and from classrooms, clinic, cafeteria, and bathroom’s as required.

C. Intervention/Direct Services

• Provide instructional assistance as planned or coordinated by the teacher or administrator.
• Lead small group activity, following appropriate training, planned by the teacher in an atmosphere where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.

D. Collaboration

• Work closely with teacher(s) or other professionals to create a quality instructional environment.

E. Professional Responsibilities

• Demonstrate initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
• Follow attendance, punctuality and other qualities of an appropriate work ethic.
• Ensure adherence to good safety standards.
• Model and maintain high ethical standards.
• Keep the supervisor informed of potential problems or Safety concerns.
• Use effective, positive interpersonal communication skills.
• Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
• Follow federal and state laws as well as program policies, rules and regulations.
• Demonstrate support for MPM, the school districts and their goals and priorities.
• Prepare or assist in the preparation of all required reports and maintain all appropriate records.
• Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and home/school/workplace matters.

• Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.
• Additional work may be required upon request from leadership..F. Assessment/Evaluation
• Assist in assessing student progress as directed, including proctoring the administration of tests, marking papers, and maintaining confidential records.
• Assist in evaluating program effectiveness; seek and suggest ways of continuous improvement.
• Assist the teacher in completing requirements for grade reporting, scheduling conferences, and recording results.

G. Staff Development

• Maintain expertise in assigned areas to fulfill position goals and objectives.
• Participate successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Meet the requirements for the No Child Left Behind Act:
• Two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education; or
• Associate’s or higher degree; or
• Knowledge and ability to assist in instruction in core subjects.
• Satisfactory criminal background check and drug screening.

After-school Hours: Monday-Friday: 1:00pm - 7:00pm EST

Summer Hours: Monday - Friday: 8:00am - 4:00pm EST
