Summary

Our client, a leading retail group in South Africa, is seeking a skilled Fintech Business Analyst to bridge the gap between retail operations and financial technology solutions.

This 12-month contract role focuses on enhancing digital payment ecosystems, loyalty integration, and alternative lending solutions (e.g., buy-now-pay-later, store cards). You will work closely with product owners, developers, and retail stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable fintech products that improve customer checkout experiences and back-end reconciliation.

This is a remote role based in Durban, requiring a proactive problem-solver who understands the South African payments regulatory landscape (e.g., PASA, SARB guidelines) and retail transaction flows.

Duties & Responsibilities

Fintech Solution Analysis

• Elicit, document, and validate business requirements for fintech initiatives including digital wallets, QR payments, card acquiring, and instant EFT solutions.
• Map end-to-end payment flows (customer, POS, payment gateway, acquiring bank, settlement).
• Analyze integration requirements between retail POS/ERP systems and third-party fintech providers (e.g., Yoco, Peach Payments, Ozow, or SAP Fioneer).

Process Improvement & Compliance

• Identify gaps in current payment reconciliation, dispute management, and settlement processes.
• Ensure solutions comply with South African regulations (POPIA, FICA, SARB cross-border rules, PCI DSS where applicable).
• Collaborate with compliance teams to document risk and control requirements for new fintech features.

Stakeholder & Agile Delivery

• Act as a liaison between retail business units (finance, operations, marketing) and fintech development teams.
• Create user stories, acceptance criteria, process flow diagrams, and API specifications.
• Support sprint planning, UAT, and go-live activities within a hybrid agile/waterfall environment.

Data & Reporting

• Define reporting requirements for transaction success rates, chargebacks, and customer fintech adoption.
• Assist in building dashboards (e.g., Power BI/Tableau) for retail finance teams.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Education & Certification

• Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Finance, or Business Analysis (NQF Level 7).
• Certification is advantageous: ECBA/CCBA/CBAP (IIBA), or a recognised SA qualification such as BABOK® aligned training or FMI (Finance & Management of Information) certificate.
• Alternatively, a National Diploma (NQF Level 6) with relevant fintech experience will be considered.

Experience

• Minimum 4–6 years as a Business Analyst, with at least 2 years in fintech, payments, or retail financial services.
• Proven experience working on payment gateway integrations, mobile money, or BNPL (buy now, pay later) products.
• Familiarity with South African payment rails (RTC, SAMOS, NAPAS) and schemes (Visa, Mastercard, EFT).
• Retail industry exposure (POS systems, inventory management, loyalty programmes) is highly desirable.

Technical & Analytical Skills

• Strong knowledge of API structures (REST/SOAP), JSON, SQL for data querying.
• Proficient in tools: Jira, Confluence, MS Visio/Lucidchart, and process modelling (BPMN 2.0).
• Understanding of reconciliation logic and payment settlement cycles.

Soft Skills

• Excellent stakeholder management (able to converse with store managers and fintech engineers).
• Strong problem-solving and root-cause analysis in high-volume transaction environments.
• Self-starter comfortable with hybrid work and occasional travel to client retail sites in Cape Town metro.
