Senior Grant Accountant (50% AP Focus)

Our client, a well-established nonprofit organization in Chicago, is seeking a Grant Accountant to join their accounting team. This role offers a unique blend of grant accounting and day-to-day accounting responsibilities, with approximately 50% of the position dedicated to Accounts Payable functions.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with grants, strong general accounting skills, and the ability to manage multiple funding sources while ensuring accuracy and compliance.

• Schedule: Hybrid (3 days onsite / 2 days remote)

Key Responsibilities

• Accounts Payable (Approximately 50%)
• Process high-volume vendor invoices accurately and timely
• Match invoices to purchase orders and supporting documentation
• Prepare and process weekly check runs and electronic payments
• Reconcile vendor statements and resolve discrepancies
• Maintain vendor records and assist with vendor communication
• Ensure compliance with internal controls and approval processes
• Assist with month-end AP accruals and reporting

Grant Accounting & General Accounting (Approximately 50%)

• Monitor and track grant expenditures to ensure compliance with funding requirements
• Review grant budgets, award documentation, and funding agreements
• Prepare journal entries and record grant-related revenue and expenses
• Prepare grant budget-to-actual analyses and financial reports
• Maintain complete grant files, supporting documentation, and contract records
• Assist with grant audits and annual financial audits
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and grantor regulations
• Prepare and submit required financial reports for funded programs
• Support month-end close activities, reconciliations, and financial reporting
• Assist with ad hoc accounting projects and departmental initiatives

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
• 7+ years of accounting experience, including exposure to grant accounting and/or nonprofit accounting
• Prior Accounts Payable experience required
• Experience working within a nonprofit, healthcare, or grant-funded organization strongly preferred
• Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and account reconciliations
• Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel
• Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
