Senior Accountant

LHH is partnering with a well-established and mission-driven nonprofit organization in San Francisco to identify a talented Senior Accountant for a direct hire opportunity. This role offers the chance to contribute to an organization dedicated to making a meaningful impact in the community while ensuring strong financial stewardship, transparency, and compliance.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong accounting foundation along with experience supporting nonprofit accounting operations, financial reporting, grant funding, and compliance requirements. This is a highly visible role that partners closely with leadership and program teams to support the organization's financial health and mission.

What You'll Do

• Manage general ledger accounting and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records
• Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
• Perform account reconciliations, including cash, investments, prepaid expenses, and balance sheet accounts
• Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
• Support grant accounting, restricted fund tracking, and donor-funded programs
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities
• Partner with program managers and department leaders to support financial reporting and decision-making
• Support annual audits and prepare audit schedules, workpapers, and documentation
• Identify opportunities to strengthen accounting processes, internal controls, and operational efficiencies
• Assist with preparation of Form 990 and other regulatory reporting requirements

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
• Experience within a nonprofit organization strongly preferred
• Knowledge of nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, grant reporting, and restricted funds
• Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting requirements
• Experience preparing financial statements and performing account reconciliations
• Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical abilities
• Experience with nonprofit accounting systems or ERP platforms preferred (Blackbaud, MIP, Sage Intacct, NetSuite, or similar)
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative, mission-focused approach
